First ride — BMW R 1200 RT 2018 spec.

2017-10-01T19:22:22+00:00

A lovely sunny traffic free day in Cornwall, 10 miles of great twisty road from Helston to Lizard point in prospect and a brand new BMW R1200RT under your bum…what’s not to like ?? I had the opportunity to take the new BMW tourer, last updated in 2014, on an extended test ride yesterday and I was not disappointed. Having ridden several RTs for the Blood Bikes charity (including   a 2010 bike with 125K miles on the clock and a 2014 bike with 75K miles) I already know how solid these tourers are. They are after all used each and [...]

The ULTIMATE riding suit..

2017-01-21T21:15:17+00:00

I am not over-exaggerating here when I say that the Klim 'Badlands Pro' suit is the best thing I have ever had the pleasure of wearing while riding. I have had my fair share of suits, and realistically we all know how awful it is when you end up with a suit that isn't properly waterproof, doest fit right or isnt quite airtight so you get an uncomfortable breeze on a freezing Alpine road! I have had none of these problems with the Badlands Pro suit, and all round it gets a pretty brilliant review from me.      Venting [...]

Muc-off motorcycle cleaner

2017-01-13T11:39:44+00:00

This is our bike cleaner of choice and basically the name says it all. A very unlikely looking bright pink liquid available in 1L squirty bottles and much larger refill plastic packs this stuff is simply magic! Just wet the bike all over with a gentle hose and then squirt muc-off all over as directed. Leave for about 5 mins and agitate to loosen any stubborn looking mud and stuff, we use a soft brush from a dustpan & brush set for this. Then hose off again, this time with a bit if water pressure. Amazing ! The dirt just rinses [...]

AltRider engine bars for the BMW R1200GS LC

2017-01-13T11:39:46+00:00

Everybody should have sensible engine protection, particularly a BMW GS1200 with those great big cylinder heads that are just sooo vulnerable in a slide. We chose the American AltRider bars for our BMW R1200GS LC and they are just great. AltRider completely redesigned their existing crash bars for the new water cooled boxer model. A step up from years past, they utilize 1.25“ (31.75 mm) O.D. stainless steel tubing making them the largest diameter bars on the market. Real world testing yielded much insight on how much damage large heavy bikes can do during crashes and 1” bars (25.4 mm) [...]

Clearwater Krista auxiliary riding lights

2017-01-13T11:39:48+00:00

We bought these direct from Clearwater in the USA for fitting to our lead guide’s R1200GS. Very impressed !! These triple LED lights use Clearwater’s updated electronics with a new 8 degree pencil beam optic and boast over 3000 lumens (up from their previous 2400). They really are amazingly powerful, but not blinding for other road users. They come with easy to follow installation instructions, and full wiring harnesses and hardware pack are supplied to mount to your specific bike. The instructions were clear and easy to follow and the lights mounted easily on to our Altrider engine bars. This [...]

Bumot pannier system review

2017-01-13T11:39:49+00:00

Having just acquired a new BMW R1200GS tour bike, we needed luggage to go with it… We had been impressed by the build quality of Bumot panniers we saw at a recent bike show. Looking into them further and we found that the Adventure Bike TV had done a pannier test on 7 hard luggage options, involving everything from total immersion in a pond and shooting with a cross bow bolt to a 50 foot roll down a rocky quarry slope ! You can see the results here https://youtu.be/b0eXYmGiaDg The Bumot Defender series came top overall when price and test [...]

Bluetooth Headset Options … Helmet intercoms for the thin of wallet

2016-04-04T08:33:31+00:00

Fans of RIDE magazine (which includes all of us here at Magellan) will have seen the test of 15 Bluetooth helmet intercom systems in the May edition. Very comprehensive and their ‘best buy is’ the Interphone F5MC at about £230.  The cheapest on test, the Oxford chatterbox at £100 got a thumbs down as too cheaply built. Our lead guide has had a Sena 20s helmet intercom (also about £200) for a year or so and really appreciates the flexibility of speaking to other bikers or the occasional pillion passenger and having the GPS system speak into your helmet too, never mind [...]

Schuberth C3 helmet review

2017-01-13T11:39:55+00:00

As you will have read in part 1, this helmet took a lot of research before finally being settled on. Full manufacturers Information can be found here : http://www.schuberth.com/us/products/motorbikes/helmets/c3-basic.html Our guide chose a white helmet for maximum visibility. The fit is very comfortable, with the inner lining being soft but firm, removable and fully washable. The flip mechanism is well engineered with a very solid feeling when closed, and it feels just like a full face helmet. The opening tab at the front in the centre is easy to locate, even with winter gloves on and works well. The instructions [...]

Helmet fitting advice

2017-01-13T11:39:56+00:00

One of our guides recently decided that it was time to replace his trusty but aging (5 year old) Shoei helmet. The pads inside had begun to get worn and as the foam compresses over time the helmet had become rather looser than he was comfortable with. Hard decision as it had seen him through over 9,000 Km of European tours in recent years and some long UK trips too ! Anyway…….. he quite fancied a flip open design this time and from seeing other riders with them they are obviously much more flexible when taking photos, paying at toll [...]

Servisol 10 switch cleaner. The magic medicine for electrical gremlins

2017-01-13T11:39:56+00:00

Came across this product when having trouble with intermittent faults in a potentiometer in an electronics project. About £7 for an aerosol can on EBay, lasts for years. Cleans and lubricates switch gear and connectors, leaving a thin anti corrosion film. Sounds simple, but in reality it's magic for those bike electrical gremlins! On a recent French tour my ST1100 indicators started behaving very strangely. In the valleys they worked find, but once at altitude right hand flasher would not switch on at all. Down in the valley again all was fine ! This went on for several days.  I guessed [...]
