Everybody should have sensible engine protection, particularly a BMW GS1200 with those great big cylinder heads that are just sooo vulnerable in a slide. We chose the American AltRider bars for our BMW R1200GS LC and they are just great.
AltRider completely redesigned their existing crash bars for the new water cooled boxer model. A step up from years past, they utilize 1.25“ (31.75 mm) O.D. stainless steel tubing making them the largest diameter bars on the market. Real world testing yielded much insight on how much damage large heavy bikes can do during crashes and 1” bars (25.4 mm) allow a significant amount of flex during a crash, creating the need to space them farther from the bike. The more solid 1.25” bars they have developed allow a tighter profile while still providing real protection. We chose the black powder coat version. They came with all the necessary hardware and even a 55 Torx fitting bit to fit them with. At 5.5Kg they are VERY solid and although of course we hope never to put them to the test, they are rock solid when fitted.
The top of the bars are secured in a total of three locations per side. The front mount is the only one on the market designed to utilize 2 bolts per side to increase the ability to distribute the load of any impact. The rear is held with a custom machined through-bolt that replaces the OEM engine mount hardware — increasing strength of the bars up to 25%. AltRider offers one of only a few designs that utilize a custom machined through-bolt. There are no plastic spacers to break upon impact. This creates an incredibly strong design that distributes any impact evenly throughout the bars.
