Find out more about Magellan guides

Visit nine European countries in 21 days on this epic Magellan tour through Eastern Europe and explore the fabulous roads of Romania!

This is a 21 day tour full of culture, medieval towns, famous bloodsuckers and a dragon! We ride through forests and mountains in the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria and Slovakia and explore beautiful historic cities such as Budapest and Krakow where Smok Wawelski the Polish folklore dragon had his lair at the foot of Wawel Hill. On this tour we have some fantastic excursions for our rest days including visits to a magnificent underground salt mine cathedral, Hitler’s Eagles Nest retreat in Germany and a day tour to Auchwitz in what was once occupied Poland.

Hailed as ‘the best road in the world’ by Jeremy Clarkson the Transfagarasan Highway is more than 150 km in length and Romania’s most spectacular road. Being described as “all of the bends of all of the racetracks in the world joined end to end” there can only be one way to truly appreciate it and that’s on your bike! This tour is the gift that keeps on giving as we also visit ‘Dracula’s Castle’ and the birthplace of Vlad Dracul who was as we all know so well the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s timeless novel.

The Transylvanian Alps are a sight to behold! And we ride right through them over the Devils Path or as it was once known by the locals The Kings Road, this incredible mountain range is also the home to a third of all the wild bears and wolves in continental Europe, if you’re not lucky enough to see one in the wild fear not as we will stop off at a bear sanctuary for some pictures too.

So what are you waiting for? This trip really does have it all! Excitement, the best roads in the world, Mythical creatures, Gothic horror, WW2 history not to mention great company, delicious food and plenty of laughs!

Highlights of the tour

  • Ride the iconic B500 and Grossglockner: The B500 in Germany is a road that consistently features in the top ten biking roads in the world, its many twists and curves along the forest ridge are truly exhilarating. Whilst The Grossglockner in Austria is the highest Alpine road in Europe and is everything you hope it to be and more.

  • The Devil’s path: Experience riding the Devil’s path in Romania, also known as the ‘king’s road’- which is the highest mountain pass in Romania. This pass is 2100m above sea level and with fabulous views of the Carpathian mountains it’s both beautiful and exhilarating.

  • Dracula’s castle & the birthplace of the real Dracula: Visit an old medieval town which was the the birthplace of Vlad Dracul (otherwise known as Vlad the Impaler) who is rumoured to be the inspiration for the character Dracula, and then the fabulously eerie castle which Bram Stoker based Dracula’s castle on in his novel.

  • Budapest: A truly beautiful city, defined by its iconic and eclectic architecture, fascinating culture and amazing food you’re sure to have a wonderful day off the bikes exploring here. Whether you’re interested in the famous hot springs, sampling some amazing Goulash or simply wandering round and absorbing the culture you’re in the right place.

  • Transfagarasan highway: Ride the world famous Transfagarasan Highway, which Jeremy Clarkson famously described as ‘the best road in the world’ and as being like ‘all of the bends of all of the racetracks in the world, joined end to end’. With more than 150km of twists and turns through tunnels and over bridges, this is one of Romania’s top tourist attractios.

  • Transylvanian mountains: Explore the amazing roads and scenery of the home to a third of all the wild bears and wolves in continental Europe. While we are here you can also visit a bear sanctuary, which is always a firm favourite amongst our adventurers!

  • Visit Hitler’s Eagles Nest retreat: The Kehlsteinhaus is a remnant from third-reich era Germany, Hitler’s alpine summer retreat. It’s a fascinating destination for any history buffs amongst the group, as it was the location of many Nazi government meetings and on at least 12 occasions a holiday spot for Hitler.

  • A cathedral in a salt mine: In Krakow you can visit the old town or you can take a two hour guided tour of a seven hundred year old salt mine, so huge that there is a church carved out of salt, and restaurants 135m underground for a subterranean lunch break. This salt mine is so enormous that if the Eiffel tower was placed inside it it would emerge at the top.

  • Auchwitz memorial site: We’re also offering an organised guided tour of Auchwitz to understand the horrific mechanics of the Nazi’s final solution. This is a harrowing and poignant experience, but one that many feel is important to their understanding of the second world war.
