The Italian Dolomites with their imposing granite peaks and mountain passes make for some incredible riding, couple these with the B500 road through the Black Forest in Germany and the lakes, gorges and twisty roads of the Austrian Alps and you’ve already got the recipe for a great tour.

You’ll ride the world famous Stelvio pass that many argue to be the greatest motorcycling road anywhere, our favourite 5 Swiss mountain passes and the blissful bends of the Vosges Mountains in France.

In Italy you’ll have time on your hands to savour Lake Garda as a base from which to explore the twisting roads linking the smaller lakes, you’ll even ride the famous route taken by James Bond in Quantum of Solace. Venice is an easy day trip away as are the factories and museums of Ducati, Aprilla, Moto Guzzi, Ferarri, Lamborghini, Bugatti and Pagani.

On a Magellan Self Guided tour we take care of everything, your hotels, routes and crossings are all sorted by us and we are totally flexible on dates, departure points and trip lengths. So why not get in touch today to start your adventure.

Where to start… scenery? Check. Friendly locals? Check. Good food? Check. Great hotels? Check. Trip of a lifetime? Without a doubt. Having done some touring abroad before I thought I knew what to expect. Boy was I wrong. What an incredibly country, the scenery literally takes your breath away, food of every description, comfortable clean hotels at the end of a satisfying day’s ride and all on well-maintained roads. The itinerary didn’t feel too regimented and there was a really relaxed air within the group, I would happily recommend it to anyone who wants a different holiday. Don’t worry about being out of your depth, its easily manageable for anyone with some riding experience and a suitable bike. Go for it.

Self Guided Motorcycle Tour of Italy: itinerary

lunch stop view on the self guided italy

Day 1 / 191 miles We start with a day’s cross country ride straight off the Tunnel to get us to Reims for our first overnight stop.

Day 2 / 239 miles The start of the real riding is here, lunch is taken in eastern France and then we enter Germany via the beautiful sweeping curves of the Vosges mountains. The afternoon brings us into the Black Forest region before we reach our well-deserved hotel near Baden-Baden.

Day 3 / 221 miles Begins with the infamous B500 with its smooth tarmac and flowing curves and takes us through Bavaria before we arrive at our hotel on the border with Austria.

Day 4 / 188 miles Crossing through the breath-taking Timmelsjoch pass into Italy you can’t fail to be blown away by the huge open vistas and views from the summit as we cross. Tonight we stay in the small alpine resort of Tonale.

Day 5 / 100 miles A more leisurely day so you can afford a late start. We ride through great scenery today with, high alps all around and then past the pretty Lake Idro before tackling some nice twisties down to our hotel on the shore of Lake Garda.

Day 6 / We have a free day by the shores of Lake Garda, the countryside around here is reason enough to visit and we have some cracking organised ride outs for you to choose from. Alternatively you can take a day trip to Venice, spend the day island hopping on the boats around Lake Garda and going up the cable car or venture further afield and visit the bike and car factories that put northern Italy on the motoring map. Ducati, Moto Guzzi and Aprilla are all within reach or for those of a 4 wheeled inclination Modena is a couple of hour’s ride away where you can find Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bugatti and Pagani (some require advanced booking and its worth doing this as early as possible to ensure a space).

Day 7 / 225 miles We leave the tranquillity of the lake behind and head to the world famous Stelvio Pass. Soaring to a height of 9000ft this should be on everyone’s biking bucket list. After this we head down into Switzerland via a selection of further mountain passes onto our next hotel stop surrounded by the Swiss peaks.

Day 8 / 125 miles Today we ride 5 of the greatest mountain passes in Switzerland. We tackle the 37 cobbled hairpins of the St Gotthard pass as well as the Furka (twice), Neufenen and Grimsel passes before bedding down for another night in the high alps.

Day 9 / 170 miles Down through the mountainous valley we go, past crystal clear lakes and onto the Vosges region of France via the acclaimed riding roads of the Route des Crêtes to our overnight stop.

Day 10 / 205 miles Ride along the Route D Epinal via The Douaumont ossuary WW1 war memorial at Verdun and then onto to our last overnight stop along the river Semois past the majestic Château-Fort de Bouillon.

Day 11 / 200 miles Hearty breakfast and then onto the channel tunnel for the final leg of the trip home…

The Dolomites are dramatic, jagged rocky pinnacles towering over roads that curve through northern Italy. The Italians love motorcycles and their warm welcome makes riding in this region enjoyable… If you want to combine great riding with spectacular scenery, and evenings meeting other riders over good food and wine, then the Dolomites make for a great summer ride.
