MOTORCYCLE TOUR OF SCANDINAVIA

“NORWAY AND SWEDEN: SCANDINAVIA AND THE ARCTIC CIRCLE”

 21 DAYS FROM £2399

How many bikers can say they have ridden above the Arctic Circle in the land of the midnight sun? Or ridden through the longest road tunnel in the world, and then climbed the ‘Ladder of the Trolls’? Find your inner Viking with us on this 21 day tour of Scandinavia. Majestic fjords, waterfalls, glaciers all combine to make arguably the most spectacular scenery anywhere in the world. This tour has it all.

After an overnight ferry from Harwich to Holland you ride through Holland and cross the whole of Germany to the Danish border. You then ride the whole length of Denmark, and take the ferry to Norway to begin your tour of Scandinavia in earnest. Following the western coastline of Norway you sweep from dizzying mountain heights down into spectacular glacier carved deep fjords and cross them by ferry, tunnel or bridge to climb the opposite side and back into the sunshine.

After passing through the longest road tunnel in the world, you visit the UNESCO world heritage site at Geirangerfjord with its spectacular waterfalls, then climb the Eagles Road and the awesome ‘ Ladder of the Trolls road. Time is built into the schedule for exploring this marvellous costal area of Norway, riding some “secret roads” and visiting a glacier. Heading ever northwards you then ride the iconic Atlantic Road which was constructed by traversing the Atlantic Ocean with bridges and tunnels between numerous small islands and skerries.

After two more days heading north you arrive in Mo-i-Rana, your base for two nights, to prepare for the final push over the 66° 34’ circle which defines the edge of the fabled land of the midnight sun. A visit to one of the glaciers which carved the fjords and to the Arctic Circle raceway (the most northerly racetrack in the world) are also on the agenda.

Heading east you cross into Sweden and then ride south, down towards more temperate climes, through the pine forests and past the lakes and meadows that define this beautiful country. Travelling almost the whole length of Sweden you pass Gothenburg and cross back to Denmark to make your way through Germany and Holland to the ferry from the Hook of Holland to Harwich.

We avoid the motorways and there are no endless 300 and 400 mile days, you’ll ride through national parks and stay in both traditional and modern hotels along the way. This trip is all about taking your time and experiencing the places you ride through. Riders don’t need to fear the extortionate Norwegian prices for food as we include 9 evening meals on this tour and all your breakfasts in the Hotels too. This truly is a once in a lifetime trip and with 4 rest/rideout days planned you’ll have all the time in the world to enjoy it!

We can’t praise Magellan enough, Felix in particular. We toured great roads, through some beautiful countryside and the Hotel stays were all excellent. The organisation was first class and Felix, our tour guide went out of his way to be helpful, his knowledge of the routes and his multi-lingual skills coming in very useful. A fantastic trip. We’d love to go again..

Ride a ‘secret’ Norwegian biker road to the dizzying heights of the surrounding mountains, and experience the lunar desolation of the Hardangervidda plateau. Or cross an adjacent fjord and then ride through the fruit farms of the fertile Hardanger peninsular and up to the ski station on the nearby glacier. Another possibility is a ride to the Flam scenic railway, one of the top 20 railway journeys in the world. Alternatively you can choose to chill at your waterside hotel and sample some of the free activities such as kayaking which we have arranged for you.

Day 8 / 225 miles. Leaving the Voss area you ride to Geiranger which lies at the head of the world heritage site of the magnificent Geiranger Fjord. Day 16/ Your choice of a ride-out today or a day relaxing off the bike. Take a ride-out around the rim of the largest meteor crater in Europe (one of the top 15 largest on earth) with its diameter of over 50 Km and enjoy the lakes and forests of the area which is often voted the best holiday destination by the Swedes themselves. Or you could indulge your inner child with a visit to nearby Tomte Land (Santa land), where Father Christmas spends his summers with his elves and trolls. Or of course just lounge in your hotel and enjoy the spa, pool and sauna complex.

Passing the huge lake of Vanern, almost an inland sea, you arrive at your overnight hotel in Skara, which you will find shares an interesting connection with Anders Zorn and our stopover in Mora….

We went over mountains, we went around mountains, we went through mountains. The traffic-free roads are glorious for biking, the scenery is breathtaking; even the tunnels are fun from a biker’s point of view.

But the highlight of the trip came the next day as we approached the Arctic Circle. First we saw signs for, and then we passed the Arctic Circle Raceway. Surely we couldn’t have entered the Circle without knowing it, could we? We decided to carry on and were soon rewarded with the sign telling us that we were only a few kilometres from our goal. I was leading at this point and couldn’t help but punch the air with delight and scream a loud “yes”.
