Mountains, Wilderness and National Parks

The Pacific Northwest tour loop from Portland sees you crossing mountain ranges, riding deep gorges and visiting some of the finest natural scenery and National Parks in America on your choice of rented motorcycle. We trace the steps of the Lewis and Clarke Corps of Discovery Expedition and learn how they traversed these natural landscapes more than 200 years ago to shape America as it is known today. You’ll ride from the lush forests of the Pacific Northwest across the plains of Eastern Oregon, over the mountains of Idaho and into Montana. Explore Yellowstone national park, cross the Rockies not once but twice, ride to the head waters of the Missouri River and motor across the open plains of Big Sky Country. As you loop back northwards the tour culminates by riding the epic North Cascade mountain range and then down past Mount St Helens and Mount Rainier before finishing back in Portland Oregon.

Each night you stay in style in great hotels and local lodges and the price you see is the price you pay. There are no additional costs for bike choice and we included the highest levels of insurance for the duration of the tour as part of the trip cost.

Why ride the USA with Magellan?

  • You ride top quality motorcycles with luggage all included and there are no surcharges no matter what steed you choose

  • We are fully bonded with ABTOT so you can book in total confidence

  • No other operator includes all of this and also top tier CDW, Third party SLI insurance and Global rescue cover by default. Everything is included in the price you see, no hidden charges

Starting in Portland Oregon you’ll arrive at your luxury hotel before heading off to collect your motorcycle the following morning and hitting the road. The tour starts by following the Colombia river past Multnomah Falls and west along some fantastic winding back roads to Mount Hood, the eastern side of the Cascade Mountain range and across the Deschute river basin stopping off at small western towns on route.

We continue through eastern Oregon along the Umatilla gorge, Eagle Cap wilderness and Snake River past Hell’s Canyon though an impossibly forested paradise to our hotel right on the lake in McCall Idaho. We visit abandoned ghost towns and then more curves and ponderosa forests lead us to our first rest day in Salmon where you can visit some local hot springs, tour the museums, go on a rafting trip, try your hand at horseback riding or even tackle the 36 mile offroad loop championed by the local dual sport riders.

Crossing into Wyoming we make our way over the plains and into Yellowstone National Park. Yellowstone on a motorcycle is an experience like no other, the scenery needs to be seen to be believed and you will be sharing the road with Bison, Elk, Big Horn Sheep, Deer, Wolves, Bears and more as you traverse the Lamar Valley. We have another rideout/rest day in Yellowstone itself where you can ride a loop visiting the Canyon, Old faithful, Mammoth hot springs and the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody. Alternatively you could choose to go hiking in the park, horse riding, fishing and more.

We leave Yellowstone by crossing northwards over the 11,000ft Beartooth pass and then wind westwards into the big skies of Montana, visit the Grizzly discovery centre and cross the rockies once more to the head waters of the Missouri river. We tour a mining museum and go down the shaft kitted out in hard hats and headtorches and also stop off at the Rocky Mountain Elk centre on our way to one of the greatest riding roads in the USA.

The spectacular 99 miles of highway 12 that make up the Lolopass along the Lochsa river in Idaho is one of the highlights of this tour. We stay right on the pass in luxury cabins surrounded by wild deer and this area has gained notoriety not only for the riding but also its famous road sign that reads “Winding Road Next 99 Miles.” We travel northwards from here past Spokane Washington and up through fruit country to Winthrop the gateway to the North Cascade range.

The North Cascade Highway stands out in a trip full of superb roads, after summiting the pass it brings us north of Seattle across deception point and onto Whitbey Island for a ferry back to the mainland and our last overnight stop in Enumclaw. Our final riding day sees us riding across the foothills of Mount St Helens and Mount Rainier before dropping back down into Portland.

Follow in the footsteps of explorers and conquer the greatest roads the US has to offer.

Beartooth Pass & Rocky mountains: The 11,000ft pass from Cooke city rivals any to be found in Europe and is one of several crossings of the Rockies on this trip

Yellowstone National Park: Famed for its wildlife and natural landscapes Yellowstone is guaranteed to impress. We have another rest day here in the the park where you can ride a loop visiting the Canyon, Old faithful, Mammoth hot springs and the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody. Lolopass and hway 12: The 99 miles of winding roads that make up the Lolo Pass are some of the most famous anywhere in North America surpassed in our opinion only by…

North Cascades: A truly jaw dropping ride over the Cascades is something every biker should experience once in their lives, nothing in Europe quite compares to this.

Mount St Helens and Mount Rainier: Riding through the devastation still apparent from Mount St Helens’ eruption in 1980 give you some idea of the power nature can unleash on the landscape, while the views of the iconic 14,000ft peak of Mount Rainier on our approach back into Portland are a perfect way to end the tour.

  • At Magellan we have decided to make it simpler by including the top level of cover in all areas for all riders to include:

  • CDW insurance to limit any liability to $1000

  • SLI third party of $1,000,000 (This is the most critical and often overlooked insurance as far as we’re concerned. Its all well and good covering your bike from damage but if you have a bump the other party or their medical insurer can come after you personally to reimburse their medical costs. As you might imagine these can be crippling in the States so this insurance covers you for that).

  • Global Rescue cover: Medical, security, travel risk, and crisis response insurance to protect all riders from significant financial hardship in the case of an emergency.

  • We require a £595 deposit per person at the time of booking. The balance payment is due 10 weeks before the commencement date.

  • Two people – One bike of choice in a shared room £2995pp

  • One person – One bike of choice in a shared room £4295pp

  • One person – One bike of choice in a single room £5795pp

  • Airfare and Visas. Cheap flights can be found on SkyScanner, your best bet is a return to either Portland or L.A with someone like Norwegian air for circa £400. If you go to L.A just get a cheap internal return flight up to Portland before and after the tour.

  • Travel / Medical Insurance

  • Meals and beverages not mentioned above

  • GPS. We don’t include SatNav units with the bikes as most people already have one of their own they are familiar with and bring this along. We can help fit these to the rental bikes on arrival and do have a few units in the office we can rent out too if required.

  • Fuel, National Park admission fees and optional excursions
