Then we leave on our bikes towards the UNESCO world heritage site of Trinidad via the city of Cienfuegos. We arrive at dusk in Trinidad and are treated to a heroes welcome as we ride in, processing along the old cobbled streets to our quaint backstreet villa. After a cold beers or a quick rum you can take a walk into town to take some pictures but Ernesto propping up the bar giving cigar smoking lessons is often the most popular activity!
The next day starts with a visit to the Che Guevara Mausoleum and Armoured train on the way to the island of Cayo Santa Maria. This island is part of the Jardines del Rey archipelago just off the north coast of Cuba and is joined to the mainland by a private causeway, with special permission from the police we are allowed to stop off after joining the causeway for some pictures.
The following day we have a city tour of Cardenas to look forwards to on our way to our hotel in Varadero which is right on the beach giving us a chance to go for a nice swim before another amazing dinner. We take scenic roads all day heading back towards Havana for your final night, we ride the lovely twisties that bring us up into the forests of the Sierra del Rosario a beautiful mountain range in the provinces of Pinar del Rio.
With all your meals covered on the trip the only thing you need to budget for is flights, fuel and cigars to bring home with you!
Trinidad: We take a lovely stroll around the beautiful Trinidad, their main industry is tobacco processing so if you’re looking for amazing cigars you need look no further.
Caya Santa Maria: This island is part of the Jardines del Rey archipelago just off Cuba’s north coast and is attached to the mainland by a mangrove lined private causeway.
Cienfuegos: We take a leisurely walk around this amazing city that was settled by French immigrants from Bordeaux and Louisiana in 1819.
Remedios: We stop for a short walk in Remedios. It is recognised as the eighth oldest city in Cuba, but its real date of foundation has been obscured over time and it may be the second Spanish settlement on the island. The main attraction in the Plaza Isabel II is the “Iglesia Mayor” of San Juan Bautista containing 13 beautifully decorated gold altars.
The Che Guevara Mausoleum: This fascinating look into the revolutionary leader shows his time in Guatemala and his farewell letter to Fidel Castro inscribed in full.
Armoured train: The Tren Blindado is a national monument, memorial park and museum of the Cuban revolution.
