CANADA WILDERNESS AND WILDLIFE TRIP REPORT AUGUST 2022
A day-by-day account of our 3,600-mile Canadian adventure.
Day 1
All assembled in Anchorage and itching to Go, Go, Go!
This is the start of an epic, awe-inspiring trip of a lifetime.
Day 2
First day of riding on the Canada tour. After a damp start it brightened up nicely for the afternoon. Some great views too.
Day 3
Today was a big day traveling the Alcan Highway from Tok in Alaska to Whitehorse in Yukon Territories, Canada. Everything is big, the highway, the views, the trucks. But what a day to look back on ![]()
Day 4
A planned rest day in the program, to have a lazy day or a more relaxed Rideout along the Klondike Highway; whatever takes your fancy.
Day 5
Whitehorse to Watson Lake. A great Yukon sunrise to kick off the day for our journey along the Alaskan Highway. The scenery continues to be stunning, we meet some interesting characters along our way. The day finishes with the spectacular Watson Lake, the famous Forest of Road signs and a great Chinese meal with an equally gorgeous sunset.
Day 6
Watson Lake to Stewart. Today we experienced Highway 37, better known as the Cassiar Highway. A road that really feels like you are in the middle of nowhere, and with fuel stops being up to 160 miles apart you need to be on your A game. However, the road is well paved, the scenery continues to delight and a cracking hotel at the end is worth it.
Day 7
Stewart to Smithers. The day started with breakfast and a briefing at Temptations bakery escorted by the local chickens. Then it was back onto the Cassiar highway before the one left turn at mile 90 towards Smithers on the Yellowhead highway. On our travels we saw the Bear glacier, First Nations ancient Totem poles and the Hagwilget canyon suspension bridge.
Day 8
Smithers to Prince George. Today we continued down Highway 16 Yellow Head highway also known as the highway of Tears (Google it). The traffic has increased as we near ever bigger centres of population. Along the way we dropped into Fort St. James to visit a historical community as it would have been around 1860 in the pioneer days of gold, fur trapping and discovery.
Day 9
Today we said goodbye to British Columbia and hello to Alberta as we travel into Jasper National Park. Leaving Prince George we climb back into the mountains and are met with stunning views at every turn.
Day 10
A ride out if you wanted, a kick back and relax day or go exploring. The majority took the option of exploring the Columbia glacier by way of a monster truck followed up by a walk along the glass skyway. A few opted for some steady hiking in the local area. Whatever the chosen option, we all had another great day.
Day 11
Today we left Alberta and crossed back into British Columbia, and saved ourselves one hour in a time change. Which was just as well given that Highway 1 was closed and we had over a 100 mile diversion: something to do with mountains! We also celebrated a birthday on the trip so cake for all.
Day 12
We left Revelstoke heading for Nelson. The first adventure of the day was to cross the Columbia River on the Shelter Bay ferry, followed by a stop in Nakusp which is a very pretty town. A little off the beaten track was the Ghost town of Sandon, an old Silver mining community and now home to a collection of heritage vehicles. The day was wrapped up with a fantastic ride along the valley floor of the Kokanee Glacier national park into Nelson.
Day 13
Today we said goodbye to Canada and hello USA as we crossed the border into the lower 48th. But before we left we had the final coffee stop at Smoochies Brewing co, a great place for coffee and snacks. Then smoothly over the border and into Washington State.
The scenery is just as beautiful but noticeable how dry and arid it appears. The roads remained curvy as we headed to our hotel at the top of a mountain, aptly named Sun Mountain Lodge. What a treat it is; the views across the lower plains are incredible. We also had the pleasure of celebrating the wedding anniversary of David and Sharon Laming.
Day 14
Winthrop to Enumclaw. Just when you thought you’ve seen it all, we are served up possibly one of the best kept biking road secrets in the USA by way of the Cascades National park.
Day 15
The final day: Enumclaw to Portland Oregon. Yet another day of exciting roads and views as we traveled along the woodland roads of the national parks under the watchful gaze of Mt. Rainier and Mt. St. Helen’s, before the moment came of returning the bikes into the depot at Portland Oregon.
However, it couldn’t end there and the complete Team Canada 2022 were hosted to a fantastic end of tour supper by Dee Dee Brabec and family. Way to go DeeDee ![]()
