Ride locations from the 'Long Way'

Magellan Motorcycle Tours are in no way affiliated with Long Way, Ewan McGregor, or Charley Boorman. Their new series, Long Way Home, is now available to watch on Apple TV.

“In 2012, while living in China and teaching at a university, I first watched Long Way Round — and it lit a fire in me. I realised the wide-open spaces of Mongolia were just a train ride away. So when my contract ended, I packed a tailbag, headed to Ulaanbaatar, bought a 150cc bike still in its crate from the market, and set off on a solo four-week adventure across the steppe, following in Ewan and Charley’s footsteps. That experience set the wheels in motion for Magellan — a company that now runs over 80 tours each year.”

Four TV series spanning 20 years and over 50,000 miles

You’d be hard-pressed to find two individuals who’ve had a greater impact on the motorcycle travel industry over the last twenty years than Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman. Across just a few episodes, originally aired on the BBC, they managed not only to inspire a generation of overlanders but also to shape the future of motorcycling’s big-name brands.

Since Magellan’s inception, we’ve been honing our own routes through some of the locations featured in each series. Below, we’re offering you the chance to relive iconic moments on your own bike, write your own story into motorcycle lore, and hit the open road with a team who’ve been journeying on two wheels for decades.

Airing in 2025, Long Way Home is the fourth chapter in Ewan and Charley’s adventures. This time, they journey from McGregor’s home in Perthshire to Boorman’s in Surrey via 17 of the UK’s neighbouring countries and nearly 10,000 miles. Travelling on vintage bikes — a Moto Guzzi 850 Eldorado and a BMW R 75/5 — they ride up into the Arctic Circle and down through the Baltic states, before making their way home across the Alps. Plenty of Magellan favourites on this one!

Ride locations as seen in the Long Way Up

Airing in 2020, Long Way Up was the third instalment. Riding prototype Harley-Davidson LiveWire electric bikes, Ewan and Charley travelled from Ushuaia at the tip of South America to Los Angeles. Covering over 13,000 miles through 13 countries, they faced freezing altitudes in the Andes, remote desert stretches, and the logistical challenges of charging electric bikes in areas with limited infrastructure. Our Patagonia Expedition explores many of the highlights from Chile and Argentina seen in this series.

Ride locations as seen in the Long Way Round

Airing in 2004, Long Way Round was the boys’ first route, as they journeyed from London to New York, heading east across Europe, Asia, and North America. Shifting the motorcycle industry towards larger-capacity bikes, the duo rode two BMW GS 1150s through challenging terrains, including the Mongolian Steppe, Russia’s notorious Road of Bones, and Alaska’s treacherous Dalton Highway.
