TOUR DATES

03/08/20 – 16/08/20

We begin our epic adventure in Anchorage, and after familiarising ourselves with our chosen motorcycles we hit the road. Heading south we make our way out of the city and straight on to the beautiful Kenai Peninsula where mountains, lakes and remote towns are order of the day before stopping on the first night in Seward. Day two sees us traversing the Kenai westwards before arriving in the coastal town of Homer for our first two night stop right on the water.

We have our first rest day here and there are a range of exciting possibilities on the menu. Staying on the Homer Spit, a 4.5 mile long strip of land that protrudes out from the mainland comes with endless choices for an adventurous day both on and off the bikes. You can go on a bear watching tour, take a kayak out or go paddle boarding, charter a boat to a neighbouring island where you can walk to a glacier, explore the local roads and trails on your bike or simply kick back and take in the quirky shops and restaurants on the spit itself.

Join a select band of adventurous riders who can say they have explored this mighty region by motorcycle. Alaska truly is like no where else on the planet to ride and the rewards for those who undertake a tour here are unforgettable. You don't need to be an offroad riding god to do this tour, in fact you don't need to do any offroading if you don't want to as all the sections are optional with paved alternatives on offer too. No matter what your ability level is you're guaranteed to have the trip of a lifetime. You could even combine it, as many riders do, with our Canada tour that departs right after...

As we leave Homer, it marks the start of our journey northwards. We spend the day on the Kenai once more as we make our way to Girdwood and to our lovely hotel on the mountain overlooking the serene waters of the bay. From Girdwood we pass Anchorage and head up over the stunning Hatcher Pass which brings us into the tiny town of Talkeetna, where we enjoy an evening at the brewing company sampling local beers and ciders.

We say goodbye to Talkeetna and head to Fairbanks, known locally as ‘The Gateway to the North’ for another 2 night stay, where a ridout option includes a section of the mighty Dalton Highway, arguably one of the most notorious roads in the world. From here we make our way through some truly stunning mountain scenery to arrive in Paxon and the next day we awake with the opportunity of riding yet another iconic road in the shape of the Denali Highway. A gorgeous 135 mile off road section through the mountains awaits or for those who don’t fancy offroading you can rent some kayaks and explore the local lake. .

Welcome to the James Dalton Highway

Welcome to the James Dalton Highway

Journeying south to Chitina we get the chance to ride the 60 mile off road stretch to Mccarthy, a tiny town like no other, only accessible by a narrow pedestrian bridge (there is also an option to do this in the back of the support vehicle for those who want to avoid the gravel). The following day on leaving Chitina we ride some of the most remote roads in Alaska passing epic mountain ranges and over the famous Thompson pass.

This route passes Worthington Glacier and features some of the best views of the whole tour, the day finishes by arriving at our last overnight stop in the Matanuska area for a stay in a beautiful lodge on the mountain side. Leaving the next morning we take on the Glenn Highway with its many twists and turns, stopping on the way at yet another glacier that you can actually walk on before arriving once more into Anchorage to drop the bikes off, marking the end of our once in a lifetime trip

Come to the land of 100,000 glaciers, where the northern lights can be seen 243 days of the year on your most adventurous holiday yet.

Tour highlights

Seward, Homer and the Kenai peninsula: The Kenai is known for being the most accessible of Alaska's wildernesses with its mountains and glaciers surrounded by the waters of the Gulf of Alaska and Prince William Sound. The small fishing town of Homer is located right at the end of the Peninsula, near the most westerly road in the continental USA and is a haven for eco tourism and wildlife tours.

Talkeetna: A quaint hippie town with traditional lodging and a great brewery. It was also the filming location for the fictional town of Cicely in the TV series Northern Exposure.

The Hatcher Pass: Known by the locals as Alaska’s best kept secret, this stunning scenic drive loops north over Anchorage with an easy off road section through unspoilt landscapes of mountains, valleys, lakes and abandoned mining settlements.

'Walking on glaciers, whale spotting from the side of the road, hiking alongside black bears, miles of off road - which Magellan has engineered to be optional, so there’s a safety net for those who don’t want to do it. You can choose how adventurous you want to be, anyone can do this tour and push themselves only as far as they want to go. Amazing!'
Naomi

Dalton highway: Made infamous by the TV program “Ice Road Truckers” this is a true adventure motorcyclists’ dream and one of the most challenging roads on the planet. We get the chance to ride the first leg of this epic route on one of our rideout days, for those who opt for it words really can’t describe the remoteness of this experience...

Denali highway: A 135 mile gravel highway through the centre of the Alaskan heartland. Another optional rideout day sees you riding it in each direction through awesome wilderness that links riders to Alaska's prehistoric past and gold rush history.

McCarthy: Alaska’s most famous ghost town McCarthy is an old mining village that offers history, scenery, and a real taste of old Alaska. Better yet its only accessible by foot or motorcycle across a narrow bridge at the end of a 60 mile gravel road. Riding there is another once in a lifetime experience to add to the list for this tour...

Thompson pass: An alpine pass through the Chugach Mountain between Glennallen and Valdez in the south of Alaska. This is the snowiest place in the state and at 2600ft it offers stunning views in every direction that rival anything in the Alps or Rockies.

Glaciers and wildlife: We stop off a numerous glaciers along this tour, one of which you can even walk on and daily wildlife spotting is almost guaranteed. Last year we spotted amongst others; Bears, Moose, Elk, Deer, Eagles, Sea Otters and even a few Whales…

Anchorage and Fairbanks: These two population centres are as varied as they are far apart from one another but each one gives you a real indication of the lives the locals lead year round in this wonderful region of the world.

Do I need offroad experience for this tour?

The tour has been specifically designed for riders of all abilities and experience levels. It does include several optional off road sections however these are all on good condition gravelled roads used by normal traffic. Some dirt riding experience would be a benefit but you do not need to be an off road rider to do any of them and as they are optional if you don’t fancy it there will be plenty of other activities on offer on those days too.

How remote do we get and what’s the accommodation like on this tour?

We are staying in many remote places on this tour. As always all our accommodation is in private rooms with en suite bathrooms, however on occasion you should expect some of the facilities to reflect the remote nature of the locations we are travelling through.

I see you run a number of tours in North America, can I combine this one with some others?

Absolutely the tours we run are designed to be ridden alongside one another, if you want to combine a number of our tours to make an even bigger road trip contact us for a special high miler bonus.

What level of insurance is included with the bike rental?

At Magellan we don’t mess around with different insurance packages and bolt ons, we include Basic Liability Insurance (BLI), and Supplemental Liability Insurance (SLI) as standard. This means the max liability on damages to a rented motorcycle is $2,500.

Can I do this trip on my own motorcycle?

Yes of course, contact us for a price without hire. We can also assist in getting your ride shipped either internally in the USA or flown over from Europe etc..

Are flights included?

We don’t include flights with any of our tours but are happy to offer advice on where to fly into and your best options for trips that start and end in different locations.

Can you help me sort my Visa?

Yes of course, we include full details on how to arrange a visa in the pre trip documentation and tour pack.

Is there a support vehicle on this tour?

Yes, we have a support vehicle on this trip and also limited spaces for partners to travel in it so they can join us on the tour without having to ride on the back of a bike. Contact us for availability on this if it is something you are interested in.

Do I need a SatNav and what is the riding style on this trip?

We ride this trip in the same style as our European tours, everyone will have the full route with stops and be free to ride on their own, with fellow riders or with the guide. You will need to bring a SatNav with you to load up the routes and ensure you have the correct map coverage for this. Full details on SatNav prep and setup are provided in the tour pack.

Can I do this tour on my own motorcycle?

Of course, if you have your own motorcycle in the states then we can price this up without hire or we can also now help to arrange for your motorcycle to be shipped from abroad to the start point and then returned to you after your holiday. Just drop us an email and we’ll price one of these options up for you.
