Join us on this 23 day tour packed full of culture, medieval towns, and famous historic characters including bloodsuckers and a dragon, along with plenty more to experience along the way. We start this grand adventure in Harwich, on the east coast of the UK, with a welcome meal and briefing from your guide. You’ll board the overnight ferry to the Netherlands, departing the next morning to ride through the gorgeous Dutch countryside and past the classic windmills on your way to Germany, where the riding turns twisty and brilliant as you make your way to your stay just outside the Eifel National Park.

The next day you’ll sink your teeth into Germany proper, with incredible roads a-plenty as you ride through multiple national parks on your way to the famous historic spa town of Baden-Baden in the Black Forest for your next night - a place well worth exploring on foot once you get there. Now on day 4, you’ll start with a ride on the B500 through the Black Forest. This is one of the most famous biking routes in Germany, and you’ll get to see first hand how deserving it is of the attention it receives as you snake your way south, then east toward the border with Austria for a night in Füssen - another quintessential German town that might feel a little familiar if you’ve ever watched the classic film ‘The Great Escape’!

Transfagarasan Highway

Germany is superb, but Austria certainly doesn’t disappoint as you swap gentle hills and perfect green fields for Alpine mountains and a slightly more rugged landscape on our way to the picturesque ski town of Hinterglemm for a night in a ski chalet, before then riding next to Austria’s capital Vienna and the first rest day of the tour. You’ll have the opportunity to experience Vienna however you wish: explore the city on foot, relax at the hotel, or go for a luggage-free ride - the choice is yours.

It’s on to Hungary next as we leave Austria continuing east, starting with two national parks as we cross the former Iron Curtain to another night in a historic city and one of the oldest in Hungary. Over the Danube, our journey progresses to Romania and our overnight stop in Timișoara, a stunning city full of interesting baroque architecture that’ll really give you the impression of being far from home.

We ride east to visit Corvin Castle and encounter some unlikely sand dunes that are 500 miles from the sea en route to our hotel a short distance from the unforgettable Transalpina (AKA ‘Devil’s Path’), Romania’s highest road. It’s the next day we take on this famous route over the Transylvanian Alps, keeping eyes peeled over this incredible mountain range for the local wildlife - not only is this great motorcycle country, it’s also home to a third of the wild bears and wolves in continental Europe. Before long we’ll be on the unbelievable Transfăgărășan Highway, a serious highlight of this trip and a road once hailed by Jeremy Clarkson as “one of the best roads in the world… like all of the bends of all of the racetracks in the world joined together”, as we make our way to Brașov for a two night stay.

You have another day off here in the medieval town of Brașov, nestled in the Carpathian Mountains and famous for it’s Saxon walls and ancient Gothic Church. If you’d prefer to stay on two wheels over exploring on foot, there's the opportunity for more saddle time with a rideout to the mud volcanoes in Berca or the bear sanctuary only a short distance away from the hotel. Leaving Brașov we ride north to the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler (the real life inspiration for Dracula) and visit a working salt mine before continuing over the beautiful Transylvanian mountains for our final night in Romania in the vibrant, 2000 year old city of Cluj-Napoca.

Leaving Romania thoroughly ridden, we head off the beaten track through forests and over the mountains back into Hungary and then Slovakia for another stop before continuing to Krakow, one of the oldest cities in Poland. This is a great location for the tours final rest day, giving you the opportunity to explore the beautiful old town and pretty market square, have a Baileys coffee in the Jewish quarter, or visit Wawel Hill where in Polish folklore Smok Wawelski the dragon had his lair. Alternatively, you can visit a salt mine deep enough to fit the Eiffel tower, or take an excursion to the incredible memorial site at Auschwitz.

From Krakow we ride across Poland and on to the last new country of the trip as we enter Czechia (AKA The Czech Republic) to spend two days venturing west, back towards Germany via a night in České Budějovice - the home of Budweiser beer. Germany greets us like an old friend, completing the tour with a blast west across the folklore rich Harz Mountains and on to the overnight ferry back to the UK.

The Transalpina (AKA ‘Devil’s Path’): The highest mountain pass in Romania, the Devil’s Path crosses over the Carpathian mountains and stands at 2100m above sea level.

Ride The Iconic B500: A firm favourite among bikers world wide the B500’s steep and twisty roads are an exhilarating intro to this fantastic tour.

Visit Dracula’s Castle: Visit the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler and see the beautifully eerie castle that Bram Stoker used as inspiration for the Dracula novel.

Transfăgărășan Highway: Often hailed as the best road in the world, the Transfăgărășan has no chance of disappointing as you bask in it’s amazing views as far as you can see. With “all of the bends of all the racetracks in the world” to play on it’s not difficult to see why it’s one of the most famous roads in the world.

Transylvanian Mountains: Explore the amazing roads and scenery as you experience the home to a third of all the wild bears and wolves in continental Europe. While we are here you can also visit a bear sanctuary, which is always a firm favourite amongst our adventurers!

A cathedral in a salt mine: In Krakow you can visit the old town or you can take a two hour guided tour of a seven hundred year old salt mine, so huge that there is a church carved out of salt. This salt mine is so enormous that if the Eiffel tower was placed inside it it would not emerge from the top.

Auschwitz Memorial Site: A day tour to Auschwitz can be organised for any among the group interested in visiting from our day off in Krakow.

Historic Cities: Visit and explore Vienna, Brașov, Cluj-Napoca, Krakow, and more as this adventure proves there’s plenty more to a fantastic motorcycling tour than just the ride itself.

Full Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival Day

If joining us on your own bike, meet your guide and fellow tourmates in Harwich for your welcome meal, then board the ferry for the overnight crossing to the Netherlands. If you're renting a bike, you'll collect it from near London and ride with the guide together to Harwich, where you’ll meet the other riders.

Day 2 190 Miles

Land in the Netherlands, then ride south into Germany watching the landscape change as you reach the gorgeous Eifel National Park.

Day 3 211 Miles

Continue your ride along the smooth, twisty roads of Germany on to the famous spa town of Baden-Baden in the north of the Black Forest.

Day 4 183 Miles

Ride the legendary B500 route through the Black Forest, then head toward Füssen on the border with Austria.

Day 5 155 Miles

Trade the rolling, rich green hills of Germany for Alpine mountains as you cross into Austria and ride on to your ski chalet in Hinterglemm.

Day 6 240 Miles

Head straight east for Vienna, the capital of Austria, along incredible Alpine roads.

Day 7 Rest/Explore Day

Enjoy a day off the bike to explore history rich Vienna, relax at your hotel, or ride luggage free on the local roads around the capital.

Day 8 130 Miles

Cross the former ‘Iron Curtain’ into Hungary, riding through two national parks as you go.

Day 9 216 Miles

Arrive in Romania, heading for Timișoara - a stunning city full of interesting baroque architecture that’s sure to catch the imagination.

Day 10 141 Miles

Enter the legendary Transylvania region of Romania via the gorgeous Corvin Castle, and on to your night in Alba Lulia, where you’ll have the opportunity to see it’s amazing star shaped citadel.

Day 11 117 Miles

Experience the Transalpina (The Devil’s Path), the highest road in Romania.

Day 12 160 Miles

Head back into the mountains as you take on the Transfăgărășan Highway, often considered the very best road in the entire world.

Day 13 Rest/Explore Day

Another day to do as you wish. Explore medieval Brașov, nestled in the Carpathian Mountains, or head back out for luggage free rides on the amazing local roads with routes provided to see either the mud volcanoes or bear sanctuary.

Day 14 175 Miles

Continue across the beautiful Transylvanian mountains to Cluj-Napoca via the birthplace of Vlad The Impaler.

Day 15 240 Miles

Cross back into Hungary and then into Slovakia through rich forest and twisty mountain routes.

Day 16 155 Miles

Ride on through Slovakia, crossing into Poland for your night in Krakow.

Day 17 Rest/Explore Day

The final rest day of the trip, with an opportunity to explore Krakow, visit a Cathedral in a salt mine, or experience Auschwitz.

Day 18 200 Miles

Begin the journey home by heading west into Czechia (AKA The Czech Republic).

Continue west through Czechia to České Budějovice, the home of Budweiser beer.

Cross back into Germany as the journey heads north west.

Venture across the folklore rich Harz Mountains, experiencing once again the incredible and smooth biking roads Germany is famous for.

A final ride through Germany and back into the Netherlands, boarding the overnight ferry home on this night.

Day 23 Departure Day

Land back in the UK and ride on home full of new and exciting memories! If you're renting a bike, you'll return it to near London on this day before making your onward journey.

Common questions about this trip

Can I get a different crossing on this trip?

Of course, many of our clients cross by ferry from further north. If you would like to do this and meet the group at the hotel on the first night just let us know in the comments section of your booking form and we will deduct the cost of the ferry crossing from your booking.

What will the weather be like on this tour?

The weather can of course be changeable but it will hopefully be nice and sunny with a chance of some rain at the higher elevations along the way. A sensible mix of vented kit and waterproofs with some base layers should cover all eventualities. Full kit and packing lists are supplied and we are happy to offer advice on packing for any of the trips.

Will I find this tour too tiring?

You shouldn’t do no, we design all of our trips to be accessible to riders of all abilities and include plenty of days off the bike as part of this. These longer trips are no exception, we could easily make them 4 or 5 days shorter but we choose to add multiple rest days and avoid the motorways as much as possible so you can enjoy the ride and arrive at the hotels in the evening in good time to relax before dinner.

Can I do this tour in less time?
