I inherited my love for bikes and motorcycling, spending my early years surrounded by them. At age 12, I got my first bike—a Frances Barnett 250. Inspired by Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman, and, like them, the legendary Ted Simon (“Jupiter’s Travels”), I’ve spent the past twenty years as an enthusiastic, born-again biker.
My dad toured well into his seventies on his lovingly restored classic bikes, even shipping them to the other side of the world for his adventures. I plan to follow in his tracks.
I’m fortunate to have a close-knit bunch of lifelong friends. We’ve embarked on countless adventures since we were young—hiking, cycling, camping, skiing, and motorcycle tours. We still do these things today and plan to do them for as long as we can.
As a teenager, I initially pursued higher education with my friends but quickly lost interest in academia. Instead, I spent three incredible years at sea and have now visited 59 countries. This international experience laid a strong foundation for my 35-year career in the steel industry; I have many happy memories of running businesses around the UK and Europe.
My first Magellan tour was in 2017 to Corsica, and I was hooked. By the end of 2019, I had completed six Magellan tours and was eager to start guiding. With 17 Magellan tours behind me now, I’m just as excited about my next adventure—Cuba—as I was about my first. It’s hard to pick a favourite, but Morocco, Greece, and Norway stand out: one minute you’re riding above the Arctic Circle, and the next, you’re camping under the stars in the Sahara Desert.
I have a passion for the outdoors and prioritise health and fitness. I’m a regular at the gym and often attend overseas fitness boot camps. Recently, I’ve had two incredible experiences hiking the wild and beautiful Bibbulmun Track in Western Australia, and I’m now planning to walk the entire 625 miles in one go.
I live with Charlie, my Old English Sheepdog. He keeps me active and walking whatever the weather. Beyond bikes, dogs, and fitness, I have diverse interests, including travel, music (from Mozart to Mogwai, Miles Davis, and The Manics), books, cooking, scuba diving, and a good cup of coffee.
Setting off on Magellan adventures is always thrilling—not just for the stunning landscapes and cultural treasures, but also for the camaraderie, fun, humour, and friendships that make each trip truly special. As “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance” reminds me, the journey is as meaningful as the destination.
I hope our paths cross, and we get to share an adventure someday.
