Tour led by Billy Byfield
Find out more about Magellan Guides
The Pacific Northwest tour of the states sees you crossing mountain ranges, riding deep gorges and visiting some of the finest natural scenery and national parks not only in America but in the world. We trace the steps of the Lewis and Clarke corps of discovery and learn how they traversed this landscape more than 200 years ago to shape America as its known today. You will ride through the lush forests and open plains of eastern Oregon, over the mountains of Idaho and Montana, explore Yellowstone and cross the Rockies twice. As you head North you will ride to the headwaters of the Missouri River and the Big Sky Country with the tour culminating riding the epic North Cascade mountain range, down past Mount St Helens and Mount Rainier before finishing in Portland. Equipped with your rental bike, the highest levels of insurance as well as a support driver and vehicle, riding the states has never been so easy!
Fly-Ride Tour

3000 miles

We start our PNW tour in Portland and after a welcome dinner and collecting our rental bikes we hit the road! We follow the Columbia river, the largest river in the Pacific Northwest of America past the 620ft Multnomah Falls and West along the winding back roads to the imposing Mount Hood, the Eastern side of the Cascade mountain range and across the Deschute river.

We continue through eastern Oregon along the Umatilla gorge, Eagle Cap wilderness and the Snake River past Hell’s Canyon - North America’s deepest river gorge, through an impossibly forested paradise to our hotel right on the lake in McCall Idaho. We visit abandoned ghost towns and then more curves and ponderosa forests lead us to our first rest day in Salmon where you can visit some local hot springs, tour the museums, go on a rafting trip, try your hand at horseback riding or even tackle the 36 mile off-road loop championed by the local dual sport riders.

Crossing mountain ranges, riding deep gorges and visiting some of the finest national parks will be amazing! An adventure of a lifetime. For the ultimate trip why not combine it, as many riders do, with our Pacific Highway tour as they run back to back?

Not a straight road in sight!

Crossing into Wyoming we make our way over the plains and into Yellowstone National Park. Yellowstone on a motorcycle is an experience like no other, the scenery needs to be seen to be believed and you will be sharing the road with Bison, Elk, Big Horn Sheep, Deer, Wolves, Bears and more as you traverse the Lamar Valley. We have another rideout/rest day in Yellowstone itself where you can ride a loop visiting the Canyon, Old faithful, Mammoth hot springs and the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody. Alternatively you could choose to go hiking in the park, horse riding, fishing and more.

Hailed as the most beautiful drive in America we leave Yellowstone and cross the epic Beartooth pass and wind west into the big skies of Montana, visiting the Grizzly Bear Discovery Centre and crossing the Rockies once more to the headwaters of the Missouri River. We tour a mining museum and go down the shaft kitted out with hard hats and torches then stop off at the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation on our way to another of the greatest riding roads in the USA.

Go on a mining tour in Butte, Montana.

Highway 12 and the Lolopass.

The spectacular 99 miles of highway 12 that make up the Lolopass along the Lochsa river in Idaho is one of the highlights of this tour. We stay right on the pass in luxury cabins surrounded by wild deer and this area has gained notoriety not only for the riding but also its famous road sign that reads “Winding Road Next 99 Miles.” We travel northwards from here past Spokane Washington and up through fruit country to Winthrop the gateway to the North Cascade range.

The North Cascade Highway stands out in a trip full of superb roads, after summiting the pass it brings us north of Seattle and our last overnight stop in Enumclaw. Our final riding day sees us riding across the foothills of Mount St Helens and Mount Rainier before dropping back down into Portland. We drop off our bikes off and enjoy our farewell dinner together before parting company the following morning to fly home with memories of a tour of a lifetime.

Follow in the footsteps of explorers and conquer the greatest and most beautiful roads the US has to offer.

Tour highlights

Following in the footsteps of Lewis and Clarke: In 1803 The Corps of Discovery Expedition was the first American expedition to cross what is now the western portion of the United States and this tour follows closely in its footsteps, giving you a real sense of the adventurous spirit of these early trailblazers.

Colombia river gorge, Cascade Mountains, the Deschutes River, Hell’s Canyon and Snake River: This highlights reel of natural splendour and the smoothly paved roads that take us from point to point is just the start of this trip and a sign of things to come on your adventure.

'We have ridden many trips in the USA and none have come close to matching the scenery and culture on this tour. The hotels and restaurants that Magellan have picked are first class and knowing there is a full support crew with us means all we have to do is add fuel each morning and ride another beautiful ride. If you think you know what riding in the US is all about think again, this tour is something else!'

Lemhi Pass and Valley: Your first rest day in Salmon Idaho gives you the opportunity to visit some local hot springs, tour the local museums, go on a rafting or horse riding tour or even tackle a 36 mile off-road loop.

Beartooth Pass & Rocky mountains: The 11,000ft pass from Cooke city rivals any to be found in Europe and is one of several crossings of the Rockies on this trip.

Yellowstone National Park: Famed for its wildlife and natural landscapes Yellowstone is guaranteed to impress. We have another rest day here in the the park where you can ride a loop visiting the Canyon, Old faithful, Mammoth hot springs and the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody. Alternatively you could choose to go hiking in the park, horse riding, fishing and more.

Lolopass and highway 12: The 99 miles of winding roads that make up the Lolo Pass are some of the most famous anywhere in North America surpassed in our opinion only by…

North Cascades: A truly jaw dropping ride over the Cascades is something every biker should experience once in their lives, nothing in Europe quite compares to this.

Mount St Helens and Mount Rainier: Riding through the devastation still apparent from Mount St Helens’ eruption in 1980 give you some idea of the power nature can unleash on the landscape, while the views of the iconic 14,000ft peak of Mount Rainier on our approach back into Portland are a perfect way to end the tour.

Resting up near and abandoned Dredger and Ghost Town.

Common questions about this trip

What level of insurance is included with the bike rental?

At Magellan we don’t mess around with different insurance packages and bolt ons we just included the top level as standard. The Collision Damage Waiver limits any liability to $1000 and SLI third party of $1,000,000. This second one is the most critical and often overlooked insurance as far as we’re concerned. Its all well and good covering your bike from damage but if you have a bump the other party or their medical insurer can come after you personally to reimburse their medical costs. As you might imagine these can be crippling in the States so this insurance covers you for that.

Are flights included?

We don’t include flights with any of our tours but are happy to offer advice on where to fly into and your best options for trips that start and end in different locations.

Can you help me sort my Visa?

Yes of course, we include full details on how to arrange a visa in the pre trip documentation and tour pack.

Is there a support vehicle on this tour?

Yes, we have a support vehicle on this trip and also limited spaces for partners to travel in it so they can join us on the tour without having to ride on the back of a bike. Contact us for availability on this if it is something you are interested in.

Do I need a SatNav and what is the riding style on this trip?

We ride this trip in the same style as our European tours, everyone will have the full route with stops and be free to ride on their own, with fellow riders or with the guide. You will need to bring a SatNav with you to load up the routes and ensure you have the correct map coverage for this. Full details on SatNav prep and setup are provided in the tour pack.

Can I do this trip on my own motorcycle?

Yes of course, if you live in the USA just drop us an email for a price without cycle rental.
