The Pacific Northwest tour takes you through mountain ranges, deep gorges, and some of the finest natural scenery and national parks—not only in America but in the world. We follow the path of the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery, learning how they navigated this landscape over 200 years ago, shaping America as we know it today. You’ll ride through the lush forests and open plains of eastern Oregon, cross the mountains of Idaho and Montana, explore Yellowstone, and traverse the Rockies twice. As you head north, you’ll visit the headwaters of the Missouri River and experience Big Sky Country. The tour culminates with an epic ride through the North Cascade mountain range, passing Mount St. Helens and Mount Rainier, before finishing in Portland. With your rental bike, top-tier insurance, and full support from a driver and vehicle, riding through the States has never been easier!

We begin our Pacific Northwest tour in Portland, where after a welcome dinner and picking up our rental bikes, we hit the road! We follow the Columbia River, the largest in the Pacific Northwest, passing the 620-foot Multnomah Falls and heading west along winding back roads to the imposing Mount Hood. From there, we cross the eastern side of the Cascade Mountain Range and the Deschutes River.

Our journey continues through eastern Oregon, taking us along the Umatilla Gorge, through the Eagle Cap Wilderness, and past the Snake River and Hell’s Canyon—North America’s deepest river gorge. We travel through an impossibly lush, forested paradise to our hotel, nestled on the shores of a lake in McCall, Idaho. Along the way, we visit abandoned ghost towns, before more curves and ponderosa forests lead us to our first rest day in Salmon. Here, you can relax in local hot springs, visit museums, go rafting, try horseback riding, or even take on a 36-mile off-road loop, a favorite of local dual-sport riders.

Not a straight road in sight!

Crossing into Wyoming, we journey across the plains and into Yellowstone National Park. Experiencing Yellowstone on a motorcycle is unlike anything else—the scenery is breathtaking, and you’ll be sharing the road with bison, elk, bighorn sheep, deer, wolves, bears, and more as you traverse the Lamar Valley. We’ll enjoy another rest/ride-out day in Yellowstone, where you can explore a loop visiting the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, Old Faithful, Mammoth Hot Springs, or even venture to the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody.

Hailed as one of the most beautiful drives in America, we leave Yellowstone via the epic Beartooth Pass and wind west into the expansive skies of Montana. We’ll visit the Grizzly Bear Discovery Center and cross the Rockies once more, heading to the headwaters of the Missouri River. In Butte, Montana, you can tour a mining museum and possibly descend into a mine shaft, outfitted with hard hats and torches. On the way to one of the greatest riding roads in the USA, we’ll stop at the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.

Highway 12 and the Lolopass.

One of the highlights of this tour is the spectacular 99 miles of Highway 12, known as the Lolo Pass, which runs along the Lochsa River in Idaho. We stay right on the pass in luxury cabins, surrounded by wild deer. This area is not only famous for its incredible riding but also for its iconic road sign that reads, “Winding Road Next 99 Miles.” From here, we travel northward, passing Spokane, Washington, and riding through fruit country on our way to Winthrop, the gateway to the North Cascade Range.

The North Cascade Highway is a standout in a tour full of superb roads, with much of the aerial footage for Top Gun: Maverick filmed here. After summiting the pass, we head north of Seattle for our last overnight stop in Enumclaw. On our final riding day, we journey across the foothills of Mount St. Helens and Mount Rainier before descending back into Portland. We return our bikes and share a farewell dinner, parting company the next morning with unforgettable memories from the tour of a lifetime.

This tour closely follows their path, giving you a true sense of the adventurous spirit of these early trailblazers.

Lemhi Pass and Valley: Your first rest day in Salmon, Idaho, offers the chance to relax in local hot springs, explore museums, go rafting or horseback riding, or even tackle a 36-mile off-road loop.

Beartooth Pass & Rocky Mountains: The 11,000-foot Beartooth Pass, starting from Cooke City, rivals any mountain pass found in Europe and is just one of several crossings of the Rockies on this tour.

Yellowstone National Park: Renowned for its wildlife and stunning landscapes, Yellowstone is sure to impress. We have another rest day here, where you can ride a loop visiting the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, Old Faithful, Mammoth Hot Springs, or the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody.

North Cascades: A truly jaw-dropping ride over the Cascades—this is an experience every biker should have at least once in their lifetime. Nothing in Europe quite compares to it.

Mount St. Helens and Mount Rainier: Riding through the still-visible devastation from Mount St. Helens’ 1980 eruption gives you a sense of nature’s raw power, while the view of the iconic 14,000-foot peak of Mount Rainier as we approach Portland is a perfect way to end the tour.

Hotel check-in and welcome dinner this evening to get to know your fellow riders.

Portland, Oregon to Dalles, Oregon: Ride past Mount Hood and Timberline Lodge, cross the eastern side of the Cascade Mountains, and follow the Deschutes River basin.

Day 3 296 Miles

Dalles, Oregon to Joseph, Oregon: Ride the back roads of eastern Oregon, following the Umatilla River and Eagle Cap Wilderness.

Joseph, Oregon to McCall, Idaho: Journey through Hell’s Canyon, the Snake River, and Ponderosa Pine country.

Airfare and Visas. Cheap flights can be found on SkyScanner.com, your best bet is a return to either Portland or L.A. If you go to L.A just get a cheap internal flight up to Portland before the tour.

Meals and beverages not mentioned above.

GPS on rental bikes. We don’t include SatNav units with the bikes as most people already have one of their own they are familiar with and bring this along. We can help fit these to the rental bikes on arrival and do have a few units in the office we can rent out too if required.

We don’t include flights with any of our tours, but we’re happy to offer advice on the best airports and options for trips that start and end in different locations.

Can you help me sort my Visa?

Yes, of course. We provide full details on how to arrange a visa in the pre-trip documentation and tour pack.

Is there a support vehicle on this tour?

Yes, there is a support vehicle on this trip, and we also have limited spaces for partners to travel in it. This allows them to join the tour without needing to ride on the back of a bike. Contact us for availability if you’re interested in this option.

Do I need a SatNav, and what is the riding style on this trip?

We ride this trip in the same style as our European tours. Everyone will have the full route with stops and can choose to ride solo, with fellow riders, or alongside the guide. You will need to bring a SatNav to load the routes and ensure you have the correct map coverage. Full details on SatNav preparation and setup are included in the tour pack.

Can I combine North American tours for a discount?

Yes! This tour and our Pacific Coast Highway tour are designed to run consecutively, so you can easily ride one after the other. If you book these tours together, you’ll receive £1,000 off your total.
