Born in Kent in the 1960s and still living in the south-east of the county, I’m fortunate to be within easy reach of some of the finest roads in England and, via the Channel ports, the whole of Continental Europe beyond.
Like many riders, my route into motorcycling started on old bikes in the local woods and quarries. My first steed was a 1953 BSA Bantam inherited at around age 12, and I graduated through several British classics before the law finally allowed me a licence and the freedom of the open road on a Suzuki AP50. A year later I bought my first proper bike, a Kawasaki KH250, which served me faithfully until cars, girls and staying dry seemed like more sensible options. I hung up the old Belstaff for the best part of a decade.
In my early 20s I joined Kent Police, where I served for 30 years until retirement in 2016. During my service I was trained as both an advanced driver and advanced motorcyclist, which led to a period of full-time police motorcycling through the early and mid-90s, including VIP escort and road cycle race escort work. I returned to bike ownership in the early 2000s and have never looked back.
Post-retirement, with the children long since grown and flown, I finally had the time to explore the world on two wheels. Short jaunts around the UK grew into week-long continental tours, and in 2023 I signed up to my first Magellan trip to the Balkans. A group of strangers quickly became firm friends. I was completely hooked.
After three Magellan tours as a customer, I was genuinely flattered to be invited to join the team as a guide. Whether it’s your first time touring or you’re a seasoned veteran, I look forward to sharing the adventure with you.
