View Pricing table
Starting from our base near Malaga, the Algarve Adventure heads west for a technical week of off-road riding through southern Spain and Portugal, with a support vehicle along for the journey.
Spain and Portugal have an endless supply of incredible dirt roads once you leave the main routes behind, and this tour is built to make the most of them. Over this 8 day tour you’ll start near Malaga, enjoy a full training day, then ride west through cork woods, mountain backcountry and wide open trails to the Algarve coast. It’s a technical trip suited to experienced off-road riders on big bikes, with the training tailored to the riding you’ll be doing as the week unfolds. Expect big variety day to day, from proper backcountry terrain to historic city stops and relaxed evenings in Tavira with excellent food.

To kick off the week, you’ll arrive and get settled at our base near Malaga, meet the group, and go through what the week looks like. It’s a relaxed start that gives you time to get organised and settle into the trip before the riding begins in earnest.

The training day is a big part of what makes this tour work - on a more technical week like this, the difference is in the details. The focus is on advanced techniques that stand you in great stead for the technical routes you’ll tackle as the route heads west. It’s tailored to this trip, and it sets you up to enjoy the riding to its fullest.

From there, you head into the Spanish backcountry, away from the busy roads and into the kind of riding southern Spain does so well. You’ll work through mountain areas and cork tree woods, with a steady progression as you build towards the westbound push. The day finishes in Sevilla, the capital of Andalusia, full of history and atmosphere, and a great place to explore on foot once the bikes are parked.

If you’ve enjoyed our other Backcountry trips, this is the perfect step up. Longer days, more technical riding, and the reward of making it all the way west into Portugal and down to the Algarve.

Tackle the technical trails to the Algrave

Leaving Sevilla the next day, you ride into the Huelva region where the landscape opens up and the trails start to feel very different. Sandy tracks, big horizons, and those savanna-like stretches that make you forget you’re still in southern Europe. You work your way towards the border bridge, cross into Portugal, and drop down to the Algarve coast.

Tavira becomes your base for two nights. It’s a pristine town with proper character, great local food, and the kind of place you’ll be glad you have time to enjoy. The loop day from Tavira is a full off-road ride that stands on its own. If you fancy a break from the bike, Tavira offers plenty for you to enjoy on foot while the ride goes out.

The return leg takes you back through the border zone and into landscapes that most riders don’t associate with the south at all. Around Rio Tinto the colours shift, the ground tells its mining history, and the old mine trails give the riding a completely different feel to the earlier mountain and coastal sections. It’s this variety, packed into a single week, that makes the route so memorable.

The final stretch brings you back east through the countryside towards Malaga, with one last run of backcountry riding to round things off. By the time you roll back in, you’ll have stitched together a proper technical route across two countries, taken on a week of demanding terrain, and finished with the kind of riding days you’ll tell people stories of for many years to come.

Common questions about this trip

Is this trip suitable for pillions?

No, these off-road trips are geared up to solo riders in single or shared rooms only. If you want to bring your partner along in your room for the social side of things we can help arrange a rental car so they can follow the trip, just drop the office an email and we’ll take care of the rest. Alternatively if you want to do some private training with a pillion we can arrange this on dates to suit you, again get in touch with us direct and we can price this up for you.

What ability levels are these tours designed for?

This is for riders already used to riding off-road on big bikes. It’s a step up in length and technical riding from our other Backcountry tours, and the training is based on you already having some off-road experience. If you’d like something a little easier, check out our Andalusian Coast or Moors and Mountains trips.

Do I need to have done one of your other Backcountry Explorer trips first?

No. It’s a great next option if you have, but it’s not a requirement. What matters is your off-road experience on a big adventure bike.

How big are the groups on these trips

We split riders down into small groups of around 6 per instructor for the training and riding sections to ensure an even spread of abilities and a personal experience for everyone. The group will meet up at lunch and coffee stops but is usually around 10-12 in total.

What bikes are available on these trips?

You’ll be riding either the BMW R1300GS or the BMW F900GS. Both bikes are well suited for the kind of riding you’ll be taking part in.

How much of the trip is off-road?

Expect a proper mix of off-road and paved riding across the week. On our Backcountry Explorer trips it often works out roughly half and half, but the balance can shift depending on the group and how the riding is developing.

What’s the weather like on this tour?

We pick the date of this trip to get the best mix of riding conditions on the different elevations we cover. As you go to elevation it can be a little chilly but the rest of the trip should be sunny and warm, a sensible mix of vented kit and waterproofs with some base layers should cover all eventualities.

Is what I hear about the Spanish not eating until 10pm correct?

The Spanish do indeed eat late, in fact it’s not unusual for people to go out for dinner at 11pm or later. We’ve tailored the trip to take in English sensibilities and rumbling bellys after a long day’s ride though and normally eat between 8 – 8.30pm
